The former Mosquito Brook Flowage, was originally dammed in 1939. The dam, which was built on private property on the west end, slowly degraded and was washed out in a large storm in 2020. What remains is a 300 acre spring-fed wetland complex, which we are now calling The Mosquito Brook Headwaters Natural Area, which is host to scores of waterfowl, birds, animals and aquatic life.
The DNR plans to re-establish native brook trout here, where the lack of a dam supports the coldwater habitat that the trout need. This is the headwaters of the Mosquito Brook Creek, a Class-1 Brook trout stream.
There is currently a beaver dam on private property, holding water back in the system. The DNR plans to remove the beaver dam in spring of 2026, which will cause the water level to drop, and they hope the original stream bed will re-establish. There are springs along shore, especially along the southwest side of the wetland, which means there will always be water flowing, but whether it looks like a trout stream, or wetland, or lake, remains to be seen.
Regardless of how it is managed, this is an ecological gem, host to an incredible variety of waterfowl, birds, fish, amphibians, and animals featuring deer, bobcat, wolves, coyote, marten, turkey, and grouse.
The Preserve is a Conservation Subdivision, designed to minimize impact to this pristine ecological area. Featuring large 5 acre buildable lots and restrictive covenants and setbacks, The Preserve builds on a balance between people and ecology, honoring this amazing place while providing outstanding recreational lifestyle opportunities.
The Preserve features a lighted ski trail along the shores of the natural area, plus private ski/hike/bike trails, all connecting to the American Birkebeiner ski trail, and CAMBA Mountain Bike Trail Systems.
Two islands have boardwalks built to them, to be used as day-use parks.
Picnic Point Park, located on the south-central side, features a pavilion for day use.
The Main trail is privately owned, but is currently open to the public.
There is a lot near the entrance that is being used for construction staging, but will be owned by the HOA after construction is complete.
The Scenic View site is being used temporarily for marketing purposes, and will become a building lot in the future.
